3-Pack Hardwired Smoke & Fire Alarm with 10-Year Battery Backup Product Description

The Universal Security Instruments 3-Pack Hardwired Smoke & Fire Alarm with 10-Year Battery Backup (USI/SM/HW10YR/3) delivers dependable, whole-home fire protection designed for residential safety and multi-room coverage. Engineered to run on standard 120V AC residential electrical wiring, each alarm in this multi-pack includes a built-in, sealed 10-year battery backup that eliminates annoying low-battery chirps and guarantees continuous operation during power interruptions.

Equipped with an advanced ionization sensor, each smoke alarm responds swiftly to fast-moving, flaming fires. Built-in interconnectivity allows you to link each detector to other compatible USI hardwired smoke detectors across your electrical system, ensuring that if an alarm is triggered in the basement or kitchen, every unit across the entire house sounds at once. Packaged as a 3-pack, this set is ideal for contractors, property managers, and homeowners completing multi-room installations or bringing existing hardwired systems up to current building codes with zero battery maintenance required for a full decade.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Hardwired with Sealed 10-Year Backup: Continuous hardwired power with a sealed battery backup for reliable blackout protection without battery chirps.
  • Multi-Pack Whole-Home Value: Three-pack allows for multi-room coverage across bedrooms, hallways, and multi-floor homes.
  • Hardwire Interconnectable: Connects with up to 24 compatible devices (including up to 18 smoke alarms) to establish a synchronized alert network.
  • Single-Button Test & Silence: Easily test the horn and internal sensor or silence non-emergency nuisance alarms with a single touch.
  • Tamper-Resistant Locking Feature: Built-in locking pins prevent unauthorized removal of the alarm from the ceiling or wall bracket.
  • Quick-Connect Wiring Harness: Includes pre-stripped harnesses and mounting hardware to streamline retrofits and new electrical rough-ins.

Industry Standards & Compliance

This alarm pack is rigorously tested and certified to comply with residential building safety codes:

  • ETL Listed: Safety tested and certified to UL 217 standards for residential smoke alarms.
  • NFPA Compliant: Meets NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm Code requirements for hardwired household fire warning systems.
  • Federal Housing Standards: Fully compliant with FHA, HUD, and CSFM (California State Fire Marshal) safety regulations.
  • Code & Renovation Approved: Meets 10-year sealed battery mandates for replacement and new construction projects in bedrooms, corridors, and living spaces.
(Note: Plugs directly into your home's 120V electrical junction box. If replacing existing hardwired detectors, installation is straightforward with the included harness. For new installations without existing wiring, professional electrical installation is recommended.)

Installation & Setup

The USI Hardwired Smoke & Fire Alarm is designed for installation on a 120V AC, non-switched household circuit with 10-year battery backup protection. The alarm can be mounted on a ceiling or wall using an approved electrical junction box and the included mounting bracket.

Important: Always turn off power to the circuit at the circuit breaker or fuse box before beginning installation. Because this alarm connects directly to household electrical wiring, installation by a qualified electrician is recommended. Always follow local electrical codes and the installation instructions included with the alarm.

Before Installation

  • Select an appropriate smoke alarm location according to the installation manual and applicable local codes.
  • Install the alarm on a UL-listed or recognized electrical junction box.
  • Use a continuous 120V AC, non-switched power circuit.
  • Turn off electrical power to the installation location before working with the wiring.
  • Keep the included dust cover in place during construction or renovation work to help protect the alarm from dust and debris.

Basic Installation Steps

  1. Turn off power. Switch off power to the smoke alarm circuit at the circuit breaker or fuse box before beginning installation.
  2. Install the mounting bracket. Remove the mounting bracket from the alarm and securely attach it to the electrical junction box.
  3. Connect the AC Quick Connector. Connect the supplied AC Quick Connector harness to the household wiring according to the manufacturer's wiring instructions and applicable electrical codes.
  4. Connect the alarm. Insert the AC Quick Connector into the back of the smoke alarm, making sure the connector locks securely into place.
  5. Secure the wiring. Carefully tuck excess wiring back into the electrical junction box.
  6. Mount the alarm. Position the alarm on the mounting bracket and rotate it clockwise until it is securely attached.
  7. Restore AC power. Turn the circuit breaker back on. The green LED should illuminate to indicate that the alarm is receiving AC power.
  8. Test the alarm. Press and hold the TEST/SILENCE button to verify proper alarm operation after installation.

Interconnecting Multiple Alarms

Compatible USI hardwired alarms can be interconnected so that when one alarm detects smoke, the other connected alarms can also sound. When installing an interconnected system, follow the wiring diagram and compatibility requirements provided in the instruction manual. Do not connect the interconnect wire to an unsupported device or circuit.

Where to Install Smoke Alarms

For residential protection, smoke alarms should be installed in the locations specified by applicable building and fire codes. Recommended locations generally include:

  • Inside sleeping rooms and guest rooms.
  • Outside each separate sleeping area.
  • On every level of the home, including basements.
  • In additional living areas where required by applicable codes.

Avoid installing the alarm too close to air vents, fans, windows, high-humidity areas or other locations where normal airflow or environmental conditions could interfere with smoke detection.

After Installation

  • Confirm that the green power indicator is illuminated.
  • Test the alarm immediately after installation.
  • Test the alarm weekly using the TEST/SILENCE button.
  • Do not paint the alarm or block the smoke openings.
  • Keep the alarm free of dust and debris.
  • Replace the alarm when it reaches its end-of-life indication.

Note: This installation overview is provided for general reference only. Always read and follow the complete manufacturer's instruction manual supplied with the product before installation.

How does the hardwired power and battery backup work on these alarms?
Each alarm runs continuously on your home's 120V AC household electricity. If an electrical storm or outage cuts power, the integrated 10 year sealed lithium battery backup instantly takes over to maintain uninterrupted detection without requiring battery replacements.
Can these alarms be interconnected with existing USI smoke detectors?
Yes. These detectors feature hardwired multi-station interconnectivity, allowing them to link with up to 24 compatible USI devices (up to 18 smoke alarms). When one interconnected unit detects smoke, every alarm connected along the signal line will sound simultaneously.
What fire type is this detector best suited to identify?
This smoke alarm utilizes an ionization sensor designed to react promptly to fast-flaming, combustible fires such as those fueled by paper, flammable liquids, or grease providing critical early warning evacuation time.
How do I replace my existing hardwired smoke alarms with this 3-pack?
Shut off the circuit breaker powering your alarm circuit, unclip the old unit, and remove the previous mounting plate. Connect the included quick-connect harness (hot, neutral, and interconnect) to your electrical junction box with wire nuts, attach the new bracket, plug the harness into the detector, and twist into place. The 10 year battery activates automatically upon installation.
